The canut apartments of the Croix-Rousse were built for silk looms, with ceilings high enough to fit them. This one had been divided into small, dark rooms in the 1970s. We took out two partition walls and a dropped ceiling to bring back the full height and the light from three tall windows.
The original oak beams were cleaned and left exposed, and a new mezzanine in pale oak holds a quiet reading corner above the kitchen. Lime plaster walls in a warm white keep the space soft in the evening.
