Nordhaus

A small workshop that makes furniture slowly

Nordhaus started in 2011 with two cabinetmakers and a rented bench in Valby. Today we are six people, one workshop and one showroom, and we still make every piece ourselves.

Why we stayed small

Growing would have meant outsourcing frames, switching to veneered board and adding metal fixings to save time. We would rather make fewer pieces that last a lifetime and can be repaired, refinished and passed on.

Staying small also means you can talk to the person who will build your table. Every made-to-order piece is signed and dated underneath by its maker.

From board to finished piece

  1. 01

    Wood

Oak and birch arrive as rough boards and rest in the workshop for three weeks, so they settle to the humidity of a real home before we cut them.

  2. 02

    Joinery

Frames are joined with mortise and tenon, dovetails and wedges. Glue and timber do the work; there are no metal brackets to loosen over time.

  3. 03

    Finish

Surfaces are sanded by hand and finished with hard-wax oil. It looks and feels like wood, and a scratch can be sanded out at home.

  4. 04

    Delivery

Our own team delivers and assembles in the Copenhagen area. Elsewhere in Europe, pieces travel flat with clear instructions and spare parts.
